United Airlines Routes: India – United States
Currently operating
| Route | Flight | Frequency | Aircraft |
| Newark (EWR) ↔ New Delhi (DEL) | UA82 / UA83 | Daily | Boeing 777-200ER |
The Newark–Delhi flight takes approximately 14–15 hours westbound and 15–17 hours eastbound (due to prevailing winds and routing). This is currently United's only active nonstop route to India, and one of the most important connections between the two countries alongside Air India's services.
Suspended routes (not currently operating)
| Route | Status | Reason |
| Newark (EWR) ↔ Mumbai (BOM) | Suspended since 2022 | Russian airspace closure |
| Chicago (ORD) ↔ New Delhi (DEL) | Suspended since 2022 | Russian airspace closure |
| San Francisco (SFO) ↔ New Delhi (DEL) | Suspended since 2022 | Russian airspace closure |
| San Francisco (SFO) ↔ Bengaluru (BLR) | Pending govt approval | New route — announced, not yet operating |
Why were routes suspended? Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, US and European airlines were banned from Russian airspace. This forced westbound routing for US–India flights to add significant distance and fuel burn, particularly on routes from the US West Coast and Midwest. The Newark–Delhi route could maintain viability with an alternative polar routing, but the other routes became economically unsustainable. These routes may resume if geopolitical conditions change. United has also indicated interest in new routes to India, including San Francisco–Bengaluru, which is subject to government approval.
United Airlines at Delhi Airport — Terminal 3
United Airlines operates from Terminal 3 (T3) at Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) in New Delhi. T3 is the international terminal and also serves domestic flights on select airlines. Star Alliance partner Air India also operates from T3, making connections between the two carriers straightforward.
| Terminal | Terminal 3 (T3) — International |
| Metro access | Airport Express Line — 20 min from New Delhi station, 35 min from Dwarka Sector 21 |
| Recommended arrival | At least 3 hours before departure for US-bound flights |
| Note | Additional US TSA security screening at gate for US-bound flights |
Air India & Star Alliance Connection
Both United Airlines and Air India are members of the Star Alliance, the world's largest airline alliance. This means Indian passengers can benefit from the following:
Miles and status: You can earn United MileagePlus miles on Air India flights and use MileagePlus miles to book award flights on Air India. Star Alliance Gold status (earned through MileagePlus Premier Gold or higher) grants access to Air India domestic and international lounges. Similarly, Air India loyalty members with Star Alliance Gold can access United Club lounges.
Connections: Air India operates nonstop flights from multiple US cities to Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru. For Indian cities not directly served by United (Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata), passengers can fly United to Delhi and connect domestically via Air India or other domestic carriers. Air India's expanding US network, particularly from New York JFK, San Francisco, and Chicago, also provides alternatives with Star Alliance benefits.
Note on Vistara merger: In late 2024, Vistara merged into Air India. Former Vistara loyalty members have been migrated to Air India's programme. Star Alliance benefits continue to apply to the merged Air India entity.

Frequently Asked Questions — United Airlines India
Is there a toll-free United Airlines number in India?
No. United Airlines does not offer a toll-free 1800 number in India. The India office number is 91-124-4315500 (Gurgaon landline), which is charged at standard STD/local rates depending on your telecom provider. For free access to US-based support after hours, you can use Skype to call 1-800-864-8331 (a US toll-free number), which Skype connects at no charge. This line is available 24/7.
When will United Airlines resume flights to Mumbai and from Chicago/San Francisco?
There is no confirmed date for resumption. These routes were suspended in 2022 because of the Russian airspace closure, which added significant flight time and fuel costs. United has indicated interest in expanding India service — including a new San Francisco–Bengaluru route — but this depends on geopolitical developments and government approvals. The Newark–Delhi route remains the only active nonstop, as it can be operated with a polar routing that avoids Russian airspace without excessive cost penalty. For the latest route updates, check united.com or follow United's newsroom at newsroom.united.com.
Which terminal does United use at Delhi Airport?
Terminal 3 (T3) at Indira Gandhi International Airport. This is the international terminal, accessible via the Delhi Metro Airport Express Line (20 minutes from New Delhi Railway Station). US-bound passengers should expect an additional security screening at the gate (TSA requirement). Arrive at least 3 hours before your scheduled departure.
Can I earn Air India miles on United Airlines flights?
Both airlines are Star Alliance members, so cross-earning is available via MileagePlus. You can earn MileagePlus miles on Air India flights, and use MileagePlus miles for award bookings on Air India. Direct crediting of United flights to the Air India loyalty programme depends on the specific programme rules — check with Air India for current earning eligibility. Star Alliance Gold benefits (lounge access, priority boarding, extra baggage) apply across both carriers regardless of which loyalty programme you belong to.
Can I pay in Indian rupees (INR)?
Yes. When booking on united.com/en/in (the India version), fares are displayed in INR. You can pay with Indian credit or debit cards. Note that for international transactions, your bank may apply a currency conversion fee even when the fare is shown in INR — check with your card issuer. You can also book through Indian travel agents who may offer different fare structures.
Does United have a ticket office or counter I can visit in India?
United's Gurgaon office (2nd Floor, Tower C, Cyber Greens, DLF Phase 3) is an administrative and sales office, not a public walk-in ticket counter. For ticket purchases and changes, use the website (united.com/en/in), the United mobile app, or call 91-124-4315500 during business hours. At Delhi Airport, United has a check-in counter in Terminal 3 that is staffed prior to flight departures.
How do I get to Indian cities beyond Delhi on United Airlines?
Since United currently operates only the Newark–Delhi nonstop, passengers heading to Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata, or other Indian cities will need a domestic connection. The most convenient option is to book a connecting domestic flight on Air India (Star Alliance partner) from Delhi T3 — both airlines operate from the same terminal, and connections can often be booked on a single itinerary via united.com. Alternatively, IndiGo and other domestic carriers offer frequent connections from Delhi to all major Indian cities.
